Walmart Kicks Off Their Car Seat Trade-In Event

September 16, 2019

While it might be time to upgrade your kids’ car seats, it’s also important to be careful about how you discard of the old ones. Improper disposal of a car seat can lead to a buildup in landfills, which is why Walmart is making it that much easier for you to recycle them.

According to USA Today, Walmart has just kicked off their first car seat recycling event across 4,000 stores. Until September 30th, you can trade in your used car seat and get $30 towards any item from Walmart.

Not only will the recycling help you save the environment, but it can help save your kids, too, by giving you cash to put towards an upgraded, safer car seat.

Walmart Baby vice president Melody Richards said in a statement, “We wanted to use our size and scale to create an event that offered unprecedented access to trade in an outgrown car seat for a gift card – perfect for using on your baby’s next car seat.”

So where do the car seats end up? Waste management company TerraCycle will collect the used seats and keep the parts from ending up in the environment, saving the equivalent of 35 million water bottles from landfills, CEO Tom Szaky reports.

The trade-in event lasts from September 16th through the 30th, and limits customers to two trade-ins per household.

Hold on to that gift card, though, because you can use it online OR in stores.
