Commissioners formally approve Sedgwick County 2021 budget

Sedgwick County Commissioners approved the 2021 budget of roughly $438 million and the capital improvement program.

That budget is funded in part with a property tax levy of nearly $156 million, from an estimated tax rate of 29.359 mills.

Commissioner Jim Howell wasn't completely happy with the budget but was very satisfied with the staff who made it possible. "I'm extremely happy with you all. I just think that considering the situation we've been in for the past 5 months or so, this is a really good budget, so thank you," he said.

The board said yes to a $9.3 million economic recovery plan, which includes $5 million for grants for small businesses impacted by the coronavirus.

They also approved $72 thousand to assess HVAC systems in 12 county buildings, including the courthouse and the jail. The county wants to follow CDC recommendations to limit the spread of COVID-19 in their facilities.
